The winner of Chelsea Plant of the Year 2023 Competition, we knew this gorgeous variety was destined to be a winner! ‘Black Jack’ features silky, purplish-black buds which open to shining, deep purple flowers. Its colour oozes luxury and classic style, blending effortlessly with any palette. The open-facing, tubular flowers are held in spherical clusters, standing proudly on strong stems above semi-evergreen, strappy foliage. ‘Black Jack’ delivers long-lasting, repeat blooming over an extended period from midsummer to autumn plus denser and more abundant flower heads than usual. This undemanding perennial is heat and drought tolerant, making it perfect for dry, sunny borders and coastal locations where it creates a bold, architectural statement and is adored by bees and butterflies. Its compact size makes it a great choice for smaller gardens, patio pots or mixed containers. Height: 80cm (31in). Spread: 70cm (28in).

The black buds offer a stunning contrast to the striped purple flowers, that develop a metallic sheen over time. Each flowerhead (or umbel) are packed with dozens of individual florets that provide flowers over many weeks in summer. 'Black Jack's' flowers are open faced and hang in the flowerhead in a rounded formation. Its strong upright stems and broad evergreen foliage, provide striking form that will add presence and drama to any patio.

Choose a sunny position planted in free draining soil and well, let them do their thing. For container cultivation it’s best to improve standard multi purpose compost with the addition of around 20% John Inness number 3 compost to the mix. The occasional drench of a good organic fertiliser such as seaweed feed is our favourite too, encouraging healthy grow, flowers and generally maintaining good health of the plant. Occasionally snails and slugs can take a liking to the new growth, not usually a big problem but worth checking. Oh and don’t forget if you get tempted by one of these big beautiful evergreen agapanthus, and who could blame you, please remember to give shelter should really cold weather appear.

Agapanthus africanus, also called Lily of the Nile, African Lily. Agapanthus africanus is super easy to grow in warm, sunny locations. Plant these durable beauties in patio containers or garden beds and get ready for many visits from hummingbirds. Lily of the Nile is an attractive evergreen perennial from Southern Africa. It produces glossy clumps of long arching strap-like leaves. Large rounded clusters of lily-type flowers are produced on long erect stems above the foliage. Agapanthus is great for accent planting, edging, or planting in mass as ground cover. They also make excellent container specimens and can be used in cut flower arrangements.

They are medium size Agapanthus producing foliage to 18" to 24" tall and forming a clump up to 2-3 feet wide. Large clusters of pink flowers are borne on erect 2-4 foot stems.

Lily of the Nile is very easy to grow and care for, it can even thrive on conditions of neglect and will naturalize readily. Plant in fast-draining soil; provide normal water and fertilizer during growing season. Agapanthus is frost tolerant and can be grown outdoors in full-sun or light shade in zones 8-11, it is hardy to around 20-25 F, but should be protected with mulch and cover when temps are below 20 F for extended periods.
Sow in trays, pots, etc of good seed compost in a propagator or warm place to maintain an optimum temperature of 65-70F . Sow in well drained compost, just covering the seed with compost. Germination usually takes 1-4 months.

Agapanthus africanus 'Albus' is a beautiful white variety of African Lily with narrow, erect evergreen leaves and beautiful trumpet shaped flowers appearing in summer/early autumn. Perfect for brightening up your borders or beds, and they also make excellent container plants and cut flowers. Perfect for growing as a specimen plant in a container on the patio, it also looks excellent when combined with most coloured perennials in a sheltered border. An elegant, free flowering variety of African lily whose clumps can be lifted and divided every three to five years if required.

Agapanthus africanus 'Albus' thrive in fertile, well-drained, but moisture-retentive soil in full sun. They are best protected over winter with a dry mulch of sand or straw. A few layers of horticultural fleece can also be used to protect the evergreen varieties. For the best flower displays, feed weekly or fortnightly during the growing season until flowers begin to show colour. Water regularly during the growing season, but only sparingly in winter.

Agapanthus can be grown in zones 8a-11b and is moderately salt-tolerant. While is has some resistance to deer browsing, agapanthus is not immune to deer. It is poisonous to humans if ingested.
