Product Description

A unique allium variety with a low-growing habit adds gorgeous color and distinctive flair to front borders or feature beds. Allium nevskianum boasts large, 6" globes of pinkish-red umbels. The short stems grow to only 4-6" tall, and are surrounded by big, fleshy leaves. The overall effect is quite lovely, especially when planted in small clusters amid taller varieties will little to no foliage. You wouldn't want anything to obscure this petite beauty

This ornamental onion (Allium Nevskianum) is a very interesting, unique proposal for your garden. This is a rather uncommon and rare, yet truly beautiful bulbous flower. It comes from the Far East, where it grows in the wild in mountainous and highland terrain. It is related to the Allium karataviense or Turkistan onion.

It is a low growing plant that develops extremely broad, thick leaves covered with a bluish-grey waxy coating. An ornamental, spherical inflorescence up to 15 cm broad appears between April and June over the foliage. The flower that sits on a straight, smooth stem harmonises well with the abundant foliage. The inflorescence that resembles a dandelion consists of numerous, star-shaped flowers. Deep pink, almost crimson colouring of these blooms contrasts nicely with the greyish leaves, creating a great decorative effect.

Allium Nevskianum is recommended for the border and flower bed decorations. It looks great in rock gardens that resemble its natural habitat. It tolerates planting in containers, boxes and ornamental pots very well. This ornamental onion looks best in larger groupings. Bulbs of this variety are planted from August until the end of the year.

This plant is easy to grow and undemanding. It is resistant to diseases and pest attacks. It does not require any additional winter protection. It prefers sunny, warm sites with a permeable, light and fertile soil. This plant reacts well to the higher calcium content in the soil. You should take care of the proper drainage in case of the heavier soils before planting the bulbs.

Bulbs of the ornamental onions are actually cloves and it is completely natural that they look like halves or even quarts of a full onion. A beautiful plant would grow from each clove.
