DESCRIPTION

Agapanthus 'Windsor Grey' (Lily of the Nile) is a fantastic variety with the large heads of lavender-grey flowers having grey anthers and green pollen, with the flowers fading with a slight bit of pink. The strap-shaped, arching leaves are deep green, forming a basal clump. From July to September, rounded umbels of tubular flowers rise on tall stems above the clump, palest lavender-grey, with green pollen and green at the base of each flower. The flowers are attractive to pollinators. Very good in containers, especially in a formal row of identical pots. Agapanthus Windsor Grey is one of the hardier agapanthuses, but will benefit from a winter mulch in the coldest areas.

Site: Sheltered
Soil: Any well-drained soil, preferably moist and fertile
Position: Full sun
Season of interest: Mid-summer to early autumn
Hardiness: Hardy
Height: 3’ (90cm) Spread: 18” (45cm)

Planting Instructions

With South African origins they are all sun lovers, but they would be used to summer rainfall so we suggest they will do better where they aren''t too dry. Hence lots of organic matter in the soil to hold the moisture will pay dividends. From division it does sometimes take a while for an Agapanthus crown to flower well again, so expect better flowers in the second year. Plant 5" (12cm) deep and 12-24" (30-60cm) apart. To get a more immediately full effect you might cram them in rather tighter together in pots. Remember though to give the pot regular watering through the summer and some liquid feed occasionally.
