Red Dichelostemma Ida-Maia | Firecracker Flower

Scarlet-soaked bunches of showy, tubular flowers and long, elegant stems are what you can expect from Dichelostemma Ida-Maia. Each dangling, ornate bloom has a greenish-yellow tip that curves back to unveil a luminous, white underside, which pollinators can't resist! It's true — these boastful beauties draw just as much attention as July 4th firecrackers!

Bright green, strappy leaves appear during the rainy season, followed by the 16-25" flower spikes in late Spring. Easy to grow and delightfully low-maintenance, this spectacular California native wildflower will slowly spread to make a 3' mound once settled. Add a little spark of joy to your gardens and containers with Dichelostemma Ida-Maia!

Dichelostemma ida-maia - firecracker flower

Blooming firecracker flowers are a sight to behold. Native to grassy slopes and woodland edges from Mendocino County to Southern Oregon, this distinctive native bulb is truly unique. Long, strap-shaped leaves give rise to tall, naked stems, 20 - 25 inches in height. Generous clusters of pendulous, one inch floral tubes of striking crimson with reflexed green tips reveal protruding little fringes of white. Bloom in late spring to early summer. Prefers lightly shaded areas that will go dry in summer after flowering. Does well in containers, as long as it is allowed to go dry once dormant. Flowers are custom built for hummingbirds and butterflies.

Firecracker Plant, Dichelostemma ida-maia, is a very showy species of native bulb with an attractive tubular, narrow flower of bright scarlet. This 2" long flower grows in a cluster of flowers that curve downward. Tipped with lime green and chartreuse tepals, these flowers create a unique effect that is highly sought after. It is not often available.

It grows almost 2' tall and blooms in spring. Firecracker Plant likes woodland edges in mixed evergreen forests and redwood forests, as well as full sun.
